Many years ago, while reading about the Scottish Clearances and that period of history that saw the clans of Scotland destroyed, I came upon the term “broken men”. Broken men denoted people who once were a part of their clan and shared kinship within the clan system, but were now clanless.
I can’t say what happened elsewhere in the world, but here in the states, those ragtag survivors of genocide flocked up. For example: the Campbells and the MacDonalds, once bitter enemies, banded up with the rest of the stragglers and kept some fragment of their social identity. They might be clanless, but they were Scotsmen first.
In this crazy 5 am segue of mine, here’s what I’m getting at. I created the Exquisite Quills blog and Yahoo Group to be a community for all romance writers (and readers). We have them all too — historical, contemporary, mystery, paranormal, erotic, Regency, Sci-fi, and yes, even romantic horror. We might be varied in sub-genre, adult content, and style. We also differ in publishing with both traditionally-published and self-published and people who do both. But like the clanless men who banded together because they were all Scotsmen at their core, we’re all romance writers.
It’s said when a pebble is cast in a pond and the rings push out from the center point, if not for the boundaries of the pond, those ripples would go on forever. What you do creates ripples, good or bad. I strive to keep this in mind when steering the boat that is my life. So, I put a community together in part because I believe doing good things is the way to go, and doing good things can often come back to you, but especially because the publishing world is quite often a lonely place. I never imagined so many EQ “clansmen” would take to heart the community I was building. It just goes to show people need kinship in their lives.
Through Exquisite Quills I’ve met, and continue to meet, some very warm and wonderful people. I’ve had members take the reins and make a Facebook page, a Triberr tribe, Twitter tweets and hashtag (#EQuills). The founding members helped organize the EQ blog and now romance writers from the four corners of the world have several promo opportunities there, and the numbers say it’s growing into a high-profile place to be seen. I’ve mentioned before that we’re all needles in a haystack in this business. Being seen is good. I came up with the Holiday Anthology idea to build a little exposure for all involved. I thought it would help shine a light on some very good writers. We’ve had several wonderful editors on our anthology. Another member made our fabulous cover (see link below for more of Carey Abbott’s evocative covers). We now have a video. Talented author Kaye Spencer made this flashy little trailer. I couldn’t be prouder if I’d made it myself. Well done, Kaye! 🙂
Vintage holiday postcards and greeting cards are often beautifully done things and I think the fact so many were kept as keepsakes speaks volumes of the regard in which they were held. From now until January, I’ll put a vintage holiday postcard up for you to enjoy.
