Walking and chewing gum?

gumLet me tell you, there are some days when there’s only so much inspired thought to go around. Words trickle in my work in progress, words trickle here in the blog (unless I go on a rant like I did a few days ago. Still furious over it.) I’ve been a daydreamer as far back as I can remember, so such trickles are really strange. My mind is a jumble of words and stories on any given day, it’s not like there’s nothing to work with. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s actually stringing them into coherent thought that bogs down the works.

Some days my fingers and and brain sync perfectly and fully-formed stories pour forth. I wrote the first draft of Loving Leonardo in exactly one week. Three days later, I sent a novel off to be edited. I wrote Hermes Online in three days. Pondering this, I’ve determined there are two reasons why they went so fast. First, both were fueled by emotion. The things that inspired them were heavy on my mind (I do my best writing when I’m outraged. LOL) Secondly, they’re both written in 1st person narrative. That’s simply me dressing in my character’s skin and allowing them to talk through me. Hmm…given the emotion of my outrage, maybe I’m allowing me to talk through them.

If I wasn’t afraid of redundancy, as in my voice/my words no matter the character, I’d write all my novels in 1st person. Worrying about head-hopping or point of view shifts kills my creative mojo. It’s that old adage “can’t walk and chew gum” applied to writing.

So far, I’ve had a moderately creative week. I’ve just completed my holiday anthology piece and I’m happy with it. I even made myself cry. lol I’ll explain that in detail on Monday.
