Another Six Sentence Sunday!

Here’s a teaser — six evocative sentences from my newest release Loving Leonardo.

Nicolas and Ellie share their mutual attraction for Luca.

My Six:

Truth be told, it was more than lust that I felt.

Our friendship and comfort with Luca had grown through our common interests. But there was much more between us. We both wanted him in what could only be described as a tangible desire for deeper intimacy with a kindred spirit. Finding Luca sensually compelling the way we did, he unknowingly came to play an intermittent role during our intimate explorations of one another. The fantasy of him was shared between our kisses and caresses of the night before.

Bound by limits dictated by society, Art Historian Nicolas Halstead lived a guarded life until a tempest in the form of Elenora Schwaab blew into his world. At first Nicolas can’t decide if the audacious American is simply mad or plotting blackmail for not only does she declare knowledge of his homosexuality, she offers him a marriage proposal.

After Ellie tells him of a previously unknown work of Leonardo da Vinci, a book of erotic love poems and sketches dedicated to the artist’s long-time lover Salai, Nicolas joins her in a race to save the book from destruction. Along the way they encounter Historian Luca Franco and discover a comfortable compatibility that comes to redefine their long-held notions of love. The trio embarks on an adventure of sensual discovery, intrigue, and danger. Little do they know Leonardo da Vinci’s book is far more than meets the eye.

My book is far more than meets the eye too!

You just might find that next great read.

I finally got that Loving Leonardo youtube book trailer slowed down to a readable pace. Oh my god what an ordeal.

The program I used for the video is a most infuriating program. Why? Microsoft Movie Maker has some damnable glitch in the code and everyone who uses it knows it. The message boards are FILLED with people talking about this and NOT ONE answer. I got an error message or a complete crash over and over and over again. I downloaded, used, growled, fumed, deleted, downloaded, used growled, deleted, searched for a software fix, downloaded, used growled, fumed, cursed, deleted etc etc etc. All told I did this about 10 times. 10 times!! In the end I loaded what I thought was ok, but no, I had to do it again. And again. Each got on youtube with freezes, glitches, distortion etc.

I even abandoned Mozilla Firefox as my browser and opted for the Google Chrome browser because I was out of options.  I got it up and running after three times. This end product has a few pixel issues but for now at least it’s slow enough to read. When I have more time, I’ll find another movie program or just remake it in Powerpoint.  What do you think?

Going Paperback & A Too Fast Youtube video

Well, as far as I can tell I managed to create a paperback of Loving Leonardo. I have had people ask me if it’s out in paper yet so since it’s only Print on Demand, perhaps few will actually be  sold. I think paper will be used less and less as eReaders take on a more book-like feel and function. It’ll certainly limit cutting down trees.

I have to wait several days before the book shows up here and there but supposedly it is up and running today on CreateSpace’s  eStore. I have a problem. I can’t find the eStore and I’m thinking what I have is a page with a link that I send around when I do my various promotions.  :(   I really dislike nebulous areas that won’t give info unless you’ve already done it. Wouldn’t it be better to explain in step one? *sigh*

Anyway…here’s the end product. Whether or not it exists anywhere but here remains to be seen.

https://www.createspace.com/4051309

But….

You’ll find my books at Barnes&Nobel, Books-a-Million, and at many online booksellers

or on Amazon.com

where you can use their Kindle Prime and borrow for free!

And talk about frustrating tools. I put up my Loving Leonardo book trailer on Youtube. It’s nothing fancy, just a simple peek. The thing is, my laptop’s Microsoft Movie Maker won’t allow me to pace the slide transitions. It looked fine here, but when I posted, it came out kind of fast. Yes, as soon as I figure out how to slow the slides, I’ll repost.  Don’t blink. lol

I’m back & as busy as ever

Looking at the date for my last post I see that time simply got away from me. I really need to work on that.

A lot has happened since May. In the past 10 months, I’ve had pneumonia twice, crashed my health, published another book, all but finished its sequel, advanced in a third, dusted off a fourth, found a wonderful editor, lost and I mean lost my cover artist, found two new cover artists, combined two books into one, went to a writers conference, joined a local critique group, did a radio interview, cut back on guest blogs, tried to be visible on Pinterest Twitter and assorted social media, gave Facebook another frustrating try, and discovered this business often comes with professional promises that aren’t kept. Ah, live and learn.

So in year two of this grand adventure, I’m older, I’m certainly wiser, and friends tell me my writing has grown. That was definitely the point of going with erotic romance first. When I re-tackle my 5-years-in-the-making series that’s been sitting on the shelf for two years, I know it’ll look polished. That story is truly a labor of love. Having gained the experience I set out to gain, I know I’ll do right by it.

I’m savvier to the ins and outs of things. I understand most of it. Recently, I even tried my hand at self-publishing through Amazon – a trial and error doozie but so far so good. I not only figured out how to get a very good looking (if I do say so myself) book up and running, I saw a jump in my sales ranking this morning. I hope to see a larger jump tomorrow! :)

Photobucket

My new book Loving Leonardo is an unusual love story, unusual in that it’s a polyamory tale involving two men and one woman in late-Victorian England. First off, I like stories that twist conventionality and make you think. I set out to write a gay love story because I have author friends who did and had a measure of success for their effort. I also want to live in a world of tolerance and maybe my story will have a small effect for good if it’s out there in the world. I see people as people and what I think of them has never been influenced by who they love. With that in mind I created Loving Leonardo.

As a reader, I love books with Easter eggs scattered here and there – those little eureka bits that make the story feel like it was written just for me. I occasionally like to add those to my stories too for the same reason. I want my readers to feel the stories are written just for them for in many ways they are. My second novel Dreamscape with its mysterious underpinnings was exactly like that with clues right out in the open for the sharp reader to stumble upon.

I did a good deal of research for this latest book. My main character Nicolas is an art historian employed by the renowned Ashmolean museum. Nicolas can’t help but compare life to art and because of this, he leaves many references to artists and artworks scattered throughout the pages. Consider them Easter eggs for my readers. It isn’t necessary for the reader to look up the artworks, though to see what he sees will certainly add color to the tale. I handpicked them carefully to capture each moment in Nicolas’ mind.

In my research I also discovered another interesting thing that I’d never known. It was such a surprise given the state of society that I even added my finding in the beginning of my book.

Here’s what I wrote:

Liturgical documents of the early Christian church in the 10th through 12th centuries show ceremonies for same-sex unions between men. Curiously, the doctrine based upon love and acceptance is now used as an instrument of hatred and bigotry by some. In many contemporary Western cultures, there are those who consider homosexuality and bisexuality to be abnormal. The truth is homosexuality and bisexuality are seen in many species throughout the natural world including the primates of which humans belong. Historically speaking, homosexuality and bisexuality have been part of every race and culture, socio-economic class and educational level, and have existed since the earliest of human societies. To some cultures this duel-nature was seen as a divine gift. Possessing two spirits was a powerful and celebrated occurrence.

The following tale touches upon the many shades of humanity from love and friendship to obsession and prejudice.

That’s certainly something to think on.

Here’s the blurb:

:)

My friends came over Friday night to help celebrate the new release with the standard champagne and cheesecake. Lots of laughs that bunch. I dedicated Loving Leonardo to family and friends as a group. My way of having them live forever.

I’ve spent the last few days promoting. Right now I have the book enrolled in Amazon Kindle’s KDP program. To people who have Prime memberships on Amazon, my book is free to borrow. Somehow that translates into $$ for me. The KDP program has a free day set-up. I can choose to offer my book free to those that want it five times in 90 days. My first free days start October 9th and run to the 11th. This should get great exposure. Apparently in the Kindle Prime end of things, each “borrow” figures into a pool. I hear the pool is something like $500k and the more borrows of your free book, the bigger your piece of the $500k. Be sure to go get your freebie this week! LOL

If you go to http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009LS3H6Q

You can read an excerpt. Until next time…happy reading.

My week long Author Spotlight at Whipped Cream & more…

The Romance Reviews

Several months ago I saw an opportunity and jumped on it. I snagged a week-long author spotlight at the well-known Whipped Cream where they review long and short erotic romance “one happy ever after” at a time.

Whipped Cream is the erotic romance side of Long & Short Reviews and they do much to promote authors and books. It’s a very cool site and worth stopping at if you’re looking for than next great read (I recommend mine LOL).  http://www.longandshortreviews.com/WC/index.htm

So I had to give them five posts about myself. Posts that were partially interesting and partially promo for my books. I’ve said before it’s really hard to come up with interesting things about me. I’ve never considered myself interesting! I went through my blog and took snippets here and there that I thought might be considered out of the ordinary to people who didn’t know me. I took from my earliest posts where few people had stopped to read in the first month or two of my blog. It’s a struggle. I still don’t know who I am as an author.

I posted this on google+ and a shortened version on Twitter today:

Rose Anderson . Romance Author

Rose Anderson . Romance Author's profile photo

I’ve a week of author spotlights over at Whipped Cream (the erotic romance side of The Long & Short of It) From Monday to what’s coming this Friday, you can see a side of me few others do. I love quotes, I love…well, come see. <grin>
It loads at Thursday, scroll down to see the rest. http://whippedcream2archives.blogspot.com/

Then I went to Whipped Cream’s main page and remembered this was also a week long contest! Yikes. That’s an important fact to miss! I set this Spotlight up so long ago I completely forgot. Luckily the folks at Whipped Cream are taking care of the details to find a winner. All I have to do is mail the prize. Back to google+ and Twitter I went:

Rose Anderson . Romance Author

Oops forgot to mention — my week long author Spotlight over at Whipped Cream is a contest too! Win a copy of my scorching erotic ghost story Dreamscape. Written in homage to Agatha Christie, it’s a reader’s Easter egg hunt for clues that hint at a story behind the scenes. Dreamscape is a ghost story, a sizzling love story, a murder and a mystery all rolled into one. Come win an ebook copy and more.
http://www.longandshortreviews.com/WC/index.htm

Here’s where you just gotta love social networking. My tweet on Twitter (lol) was retweeted twice. In Twitterland that’s a compliment. As a result of two of my Tweeps (Twitter users who follow me and likely that I follow) passing my info on to their Tweeps, my little bit of info was sent to another 2000+ people (2000+ more people than I have dialogue with). Who knows, maybe my posts will stir some interest in my books.

I never got into FaceBook because of its blatant shady actions, and I never went further than a profile for my dog on My Space. However, I do enjoy Google+ and Twitter. I don’t use either to the degree other authors (or non-authors) do. But I do make occasional comments and use both for promotion.

I like sharing information. When you share information it opens the door to discussion and I love deep discussions. In my private life and in this new author’s world, I find myself blessed with intelligent people to share thoughts and information with. Deep discussions around campfires or dinner conversation with friends fill me up inside. I’m also part of that wonderful authors’ group I often mention here. Not a day goes by where we aren’t sharing news, ideas, gadgets and encouragement. Of course there’s my larger authors’ group specifically for authors published under Siren-Bookstrand. Beyond that, I’m part of an author community that’s larger still. Seeing authors in all stages of their careers makes this sometimes crazy whirlwind easier to live and work in. This is good because there are times when I most definitely feel like I’m in over my head.

~~~~~
I’ve mentioned here recently that I posted my Dreamscape book trailer over at Preview the Book. It held the number one spot for a while and is still up there with recent previews.  It’s nice to have extra exposure. http://www.previewthebook.com/book.php?id=3345
~~~~~

I really need to do better keeping track of what I read where, if I’m going to mention it here. Sorry. If I find the article I’m about to speak of, I’ll post the link at a later date. Someone wrote recently about the friendly brother/sisterhood of romance writers. It’s true. Someone on the outside might think it would be a competitive field but no, not at all. I haven’t been in such a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment of peers since I taught school a zillion years ago. Every author of my acquaintance so far, be they male or female, is compassionate, encouraging, and helpful.

Case in point: I belong to a marketing group that has authors from all walks of life populating it. Recently, an author’s husband passed away suddenly. A hue and a cry went out to help her family with their loss. I don’t know her, I’m somewhat new to that group, but I will post her information here like so many other authors have on their own blogs and websites to help in this small way. I can’t even allow myself to step into her shoes. I too am married to my best friend. Melinda my heart goes out to you. http://www.tommyelmoretheloveofourlife.blogspot.com  Melinda Elmore writes Native American mysteries. If these stories interest you, her site and info is here http://www.melindaelmore.webs.com

Lots of news coming up, especially as we gear up for the Fall for Romance extravaganza. I’ll post more later. Until then,

Seven Things You Might Not Guess About Me  :D

  1. I can roll my tongue. Try it, not everyone can!
  2. I’m a very fast reader & take great pains to slow down when I read aloud.
  3. I enjoy bowling and average a 160 game. I did bowl 200 once but only after the ball smashed my finger and I was in pain. Talk about focus.
  4. I know how to quill birch bark (decorate bark with porcupine quills in the Ojibwa style)
  5. I once owned a tipi (and yes, we did sleep in it often)
  6. I love seeing hot air balloons in the sky but chickened out on the gift my husband gave me for my 40th birthday. Sorry honey.
  7. I’ve been skunked and once was more than enough!

Fall for Romance & more…

Ugh. I have a severe case of medicine head. As I can’t seem to stitch two coherent thoughts together in my novel, I figured several disjointed thoughts separated by these  –> ~~~  on my blog , might be a good use of time. They wont be nearly as noticeable here as they would in the story. I truly hate head colds that settle in my lungs. My abdominal muscles are so sore from coughing, I feel like I’ve done a few rounds in the ring with Sugar Ray. Blah.

The Summer Love-In, this past summer’s author extravaganza, was a blast, even with the enormous curve ball Mother Nature threw my way. That storm knocked out power for five full days and made me a morning nomad looking for a place to plug in my laptop. If anyone is truly interested, scroll back several weeks and you’ll see all the pitiful details.

But anyway, my authors’ group is hosting another such event on November 10th. It’s our Fall for Romance. Here’s the poster:

It’s similar to the last event with contests, prizes, laughs and more. I’ll post more details as I get them. I’m looking forward to it. The last was fun.

~~~
I recently had a guest post on paranormal author Rosalie Lario’s blog. If you have yet to read her tales of demons and angels, follow this link and peek at her book blurbs. There’s some pretty deep and intense storytelling there.
Still promoting Dreamscape, in this post I discuss one of my heroes of literature – Agatha Christie.
http://rosalielario.com/tag/dreamscape/
Today I have a special guest, author Rose Anderson, blogging about her latest release, Dreamscape:
You know the story. It begins with ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear. They’re invited to a remote mansion on an island, but their host curiously fails to appear. Alone with the small household staff and the inescapable demons standing in the shadows of their pasts, the guests are cut off from the outside world. One by one, they share these darkest secrets. And one by one, they die. Perhaps you’ve read the book or seen the five iterations in film — Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.
Considered by many to be her most famous work, it ranks as the 7th bestselling book of all time. And Then There Were None was the most adapted of all her stories in film, theater, radio, and even video games. From its first publication in 1939 when the title included a racial epithet, to the more recent 2010 radio adaptation, it’s a novel with staying power. Why? It was summed up in the 1940 The New York Times Book Review:
“When you read what happens, after that you will not believe it, but you will keep on reading, and as one incredible event is followed by another even more incredible you will still keep on reading. The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery that Agatha Christie has ever written, and if any other writer has ever surpassed it for sheer puzzlement the name escapes our memory. We are referring, of course, to mysteries that have logical explanations, as this one has. It is a tall story, to be sure, but it could have happened.”
Agatha Christie is one of my literary heroes. On my shelf of favorite fiction, her works sit side by side with Diana Gabaldon, Charlotte Brontë, Michael Crichton, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and JK Rowling. I like reading novels that make my heart pound in anticipation with each anxiously turned page. And Then There Were None was my first encounter with suspense; it was also my first exposure to Agatha’s works.
My older sister was a passionate book lover who recommended this book as her all-time favorite Agatha Christie story. At age eleven, I didn’t understand the broader adult nuance of the story, but I did enjoy it. Several years later, I saw an old black and white movie entitled Ten Little Indians. I thought, hey wait a minute, that’s an Agatha Christie story! Inspired to reread the novel, I saw what my younger self had missed. The plot was literally peppered with clues that pointed to the murderer. I already knew who the murderer was so picking out the clues was easy.
So all these years later, I decided to write a book in homage to that amazingly creative author. Like Agatha’s famous story, Dreamscape too, is a literary puzzle. I crafted it to be an Easter egg hunt — a story within a story filled with clues scattered along for the avid reader to catch.
In this tale, I introduce readers to Dr. Lanie O’Keefe: a confident, independent, woman who’s just bought herself a Mid-Victorian mansion. This is a dream house in the truest sense, for Lanie has been dreaming of the Bowen mansion since she was a child. The locals say the place is haunted and it certainly looks the part with its overgrown weeds and decades of vandalism. Undaunted by ghost stories, Lanie moves in with grand plans to refit the old coach house into a free clinic. Little does she realize the local legend is true.
For nearly one hundred and twenty years, the ghost of Doctor Jason Bowen roams his house contemplating the treachery that took his life. His brooding thoughts are interrupted when a woman arrives with valise in tow. Not only is she moving into his house, but she’s sleeping in the master bedroom as well – his bedroom. As a gentleman coming from a time of social propriety and impeccable manners; Jason tries to give his houseguest space, but soon becomes infatuated with her. Once he discovers the electric signature of his ghostly essence can ride Lanie’s dreams, he follows where they take him and finds himself back in his time period as the date of his murder draws near.
Yes, I planned the suspense carefully. Like Agatha Christie’s works, uncovering my trail of breadcrumbs isn’t necessary to move the tale along. When taken as a whole, they offer an insider’s peek at the truth long before the truth is revealed. Dreamscape is complex, richly detailed, and sensual, and I’ve scattered enough crumbs that even Hansel and Gretel might see the story hidden within! Writing it I learned something about myself. Not only do I like taking the path less traveled, I enjoy making the implausible plausible. I really like offbeat turn-things-on-their-ear scenarios where the writer finds a box he/she must write themselves out of. To me, the insurmountable prospect is a curiously locked door. The next so many weeks or months of writing trying to make the unlikely likely and the impossible possible is akin to finding the fat ring of keys to try the lock with.
Can a ghost find love among the living? Read Dreamscape and discover for yourself. I think both you and Agatha will be pleased.
Blurb & Assorted links: (lol you don’t really need to read this stuff again)
That was a fun interview.
~~~~

Dreamscape’s youtube book trailer is in a contest at the You Gotta Read Videos blog. My humble little powerpoint is up against some terrific professionally done book trailers. Scant chance of a win I’m thinking, but as far as exposure goes, maybe Dreamscape will pick up a few more readers from being there. Come see for yourself. I found several books there that I wouldn’t mind reading.

http://yougottareadvideos.blogspot.com/

Speaking of Dreamscape’s book trailer, I sent it to Preview the Book yesterday. Hermes Online held the number one spot for nearly two weeks. I’m hoping Dreamscape does the same. I really like making these things and have learned about two software applications to make them better. I’ve already began collecting images for the next story. What a process. You have to be sure there’s no copyright issues on music and images. As large as the internet is, you’d think it would be easy. Nope. But as I’ve said before, I do have permission from several artists to use their drawings and photos. Not as many as I need just yet, but I’m getting closer.

~~~
I was recently invited to a Q&A at author Lillian Grant’s blog. Lillian writes very steamy sizzlers.  If you’re looking for something to warm your winter, look no further, it’s here!
http://www.lilliangrant.com
These interviews seem to say a lot of the same stuff. Well, that’s true. Mostly, I’m promoting Dreamscape as my latest book.  With these interviews scattered all over the internet, it’s not so repetitive, but encapsulated here, they’re downright redundant. Feel free to skip if the Dreamscape stuff seems old news by now.  :)
Today I am digging beneath the outer shell of romance author Rose Anderson. So, let’s find out just how much she is willing to share.
1.    When and why did you start writing romance?
Oh that’s a long story. I used to take the train to visit my sister and she’d always make suggestions for a book or two for the ride home. More than once I found myself mentally rewriting the story (not all of her picks were good ones). I’d add more suspense, a longer love scene, or additional dialogue. As a romance reader I like seduction. Written seduction is a mind game, a ring-side seat to observe the psychological metamorphosis of the characters. Secondly, I like the physics of it. There comes a point where the connection between characters ignites into something neither has any control over — a 451° point of complete surrender that leads to total combustion. Lastly, because seduction is a cerebral thing, I find erotic romance to be the natural progression of the romance story. That was my introduction to literary romance.
Years later, I read that romance was the fastest growing genre, the sub-genre of erotic romance was even more so. At the time, I was three years into writing a 5-book non-romance (but certainly romantic) series. Up to that point I’d written many books, children’s books mostly, and all unpublished for one reason or another. That same week, I read that many New York Times bestsellers started out in romance. The Muse spoke to me! I figured I’d write erotic romance to break into this business, learn the ropes, and have some idea what the heck I was doing by the time I finished my series. I have so much of my life invested in that series, so much emotional involvement, I’d really hate to screw it up. Cutting my author’s teeth before I tried to publish the series just seemed the way to go. That was the impetus.
2.    What’s the strangest thing that’s inspired one of your stories?
I live near a lovely glaciated part of Wisconsin. Each fall the local artists, their studios tucked into the rolling wooded hills, hold an art tour. My husband and I decided to go one blue-skied October day and stumbled upon an author doing book signings. We struck up a conversation. Her book was about the Wisconsin Werewolf. It turns out she was a newspaper reporter who’d been following sightings for years. Needless to say we bought the book. The accounts were fascinating and most of the sightings were reported by people you’d likely believe – policemen, ministers, doctors. I just finished writing a new novel based on this local legend.
3.    Have you ever based a character on someone you know? If so, did you tell them? If not, is there someone in your life you’d like to base a character on?
My life, including the people I know, makes cameo appearances in one form or another in all my books. It’s easy to draw from the familiar. If readers knew me, they’d recognize things about me right off the bat — my furnishings or my car, my pets, and they’d even things about themselves though they may only associate with the words and not take them as directly theirs. I have long-time friends, a husband and wife, who are the most supportive people you can imagine. Every step of the way they’ve said they’re proud of me. I wrote them into my above mentioned novel as Randi the waitress and Bob, the small-town mechanic who loves her. They’re thrilled. I can’t wait to see their faces when they read their chapter.
4.    Tell us about your latest book.
Dreamscape is a literary puzzle written in homage to Agatha Christie. I crafted it to be an Easter egg hunt — a story within a story filled with clues scattered throughout for the avid reader to catch. I planned the suspense carefully. Like Agatha Christie’s works, the clues, when taken as a whole, offer an insider’s peek at the truth long before the truth is revealed. The story is complex, richly detailed, and sensual.
In this tale, I introduce readers to Dr. Lanie O’Keefe: a confident, independent, woman who’s just bought herself a Mid-Victorian mansion. This is a dream house in the truest sense, for Lanie has been dreaming of the Bowen mansion since she was a child. The locals say the place is haunted and it certainly looks the part with its overgrown weeds and decades of vandalism. Undaunted by ghost stories, Lanie moves in with grand plans to refit the old coach house into a free clinic. Little does she realize the local legend is true.
For nearly one hundred and twenty years, the ghost of Doctor Jason Bowen roams his house contemplating the treachery that took his life. His brooding thoughts are interrupted when a woman arrives with valise in tow. Not only is she moving into his house, but she’s sleeping in the master bedroom as well – his bedroom. As a gentleman coming from a time of social propriety and impeccable manners; Jason tries to give his houseguest space, but soon becomes infatuated with her. Once he discovers the electric signature of his ghostly essence can ride Lanie’s dreams, he follows where they take him and finds himself back in his time period as the date of his murder draws near.
5.    Is there a plot you’ve always wanted to write but haven’t been able to yet?
One hasn’t revealed itself to me yet. I write full time so if ever an idea pops into my head, I’ll jot it down for later.
6.    How do you come up with the ideas for your stories?
It’s completely out of my hands, if that makes sense. Sometimes the stories come out of nowhere, sometimes in the course of a conversation with friends, an unrelated concept will appear. I keep a small “idea book” with me at all times just in case the Muse knocks.
7.    Which author have you always wanted to meet and why?
I’d love to meet any author who paints with words. I prefer the richest detail when I read. There are a few authors I know of who write so richly, you can actually smell the story. A “talking shop” dinner conversation with Michael Crichton and Diana Gabaldon would be better than dessert. :)
8.    I wonder, when did you first get an inkling that you could write and when did you first act on it?
I was in highschool and we’d just finished the Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. The assignment was to craft a story in the same manner as Tolkien, using one or more elements from that book. I wrote about a dragon who’d just laid an egg. The teacher said it was the most beautiful descriptive prose she’d ever read in all her years and said if I had not yet chosen what I would do with my life that I should seriously become a writer. I wish I could remember what I wrote but this was long before computers allowed you to copy and backup your work. I wasn’t about to rewrite so many pages by hand if I didn’t have to! She kept it.
Many years passed before I seriously got into writing. I worked as a teacher and my kids were little then. I wrote a story to teach my son how to read and I’ve been writing ever since.
9.    What is a typical day for Rose?  Do you have set hours when you write or do you only get to hide under the stairs when life allows?
My kids are grown and my husband works a 9-5 outside the home, so my time for writing is pretty much my own five days a week, with weekends set aside for family. I write every day and take pains to limit it to Monday to Friday unless I’m on a roll. It’s dealing with those pesky things that interrupt like laundry, grocery shopping, and housecleaning. I fantasize about having a staff to handle all that. hehe
10.     Tell me about your muse and are they in charge or do you manage to rein them in?
Of the Nine, Calliope is my main Muse. I figure if she could inspire Homer, she could  inspire me. I’ve dedicated my blog to her and so far she and I have done ok working together. As for reining them in, nah, I hope they run with me!
11.     When do you usually get plot motivation?  How do you keep hold of those ideas before they disappear into thin air?
My mind runs continuously. Something is bound to pop up out of thin air! Like I mentioned above, I keep idea books handy. I’ve even written ideas on the back of grocery receipts while stopped at traffic lights on the way home from the store. The best way to describe my mind is to compare it to a crowded restaurant where every table has a story — The guy stabbing his olive like a voodoo doll got turned down for a promotion. Somebody’s pocket holds an engagement ring. Across the room a potential suicide comes to terms with his weighty decision and nearby sits a young woman who doesn’t yet know she’ll save his life. Add an overlay of detail – a server mopping up blood red wine, steaming plates of fettuccine Alfredo, and the caramelized scent of crème brûlée. With chatter like this going on 24/7, something’s bound to come of it! I write them down as they come and yes, I have volumes of idea books!
12.     What has been the most exhilarating moment to date in your writing career?
I have many such moments. Having my books accepted at Siren-Bookstand. Seeing my first book on Amazon was monumental and I cried when I held my first paperback in my hands. Discovering my books had gone international made me absolutely giddy. Great reviews feel pretty good too!
People can find me just about anywhere online. I have two books out now, Dreamscape and Hermes Online. Drop me a line or subscribe to my blog. I love to hear from readers.
Seven Things You Might Not Guess About Me  :D
  3. I really dislike shopping but love scrounging
  4. I like playing ski ball
  5. I love word games like Balderdash, but no one will play with me  :( *sniff*
  6. Were I younger, I would have gotten into Steampunk (think Jules Verne stuff)
  7. I can do seven moves in Cat’s Cradle (my grandma taught me)
A Star Studded Smile :)
I’m smiling. I’ve been smiling since Saturday. No, I’ve been smiling since Friday night when my husband and I went to watch a hypnosis stage show at a martini bar with friends.  What a lightweight I am. Two expertly made Fuzzy Navels and I should never cross paths. Never. The reality of me is I’m practically teetotal.  The next morning with a dull fevery throb in the center of my brain, I was reminded of the last time we did this.  I was also reminded by my last pained vow not to do this again. *sigh* I know we’ll all go out again and have another fun night. I also I know that one Fuzzy Navel, that simple orange juice-based mixed drink with that shot of apricot liqueur, will taste so good. When I finish it, someone will buy me another out of friendship and of course I’ll consider the sweet gesture for what it is and in a moment of fuzzy-edged clarity I’ll recall what it will make me feel like the next day. Unfortunately, the influence of the last Fuzzy Navel will muddy my resolve. Yes, I’ll be determined to just hold it in my hand and look like I’m drinking it as a show of goodwill and appreciation for a friend’s thoughtfulness. But soon it will begin to whisper to me, I taste sooo good.
And it will.
So my muddy Friday night resolve and Saturday morning hangover aside,  there were several notable things happening in the past few days.
Last week, as briefly mentioned in the blog, I took part in The Romance Studio’s End of Summer Bash. I made some new friends/fans, and ran a few contests. I had a great bunch of interested readers and have goodies to mail out this week. Participating gives me a list of interested readers and their emails. My friend Missy has a huge mailing list for her updates and newsletter (when I grow up I want to have her panache for organizing.) The whole idea of a newsletter caught my imagination the other day. It’s one thing to have interested readers’ email addresses, it’s another to have something to say to them.  I already load my blog with every bit of non-fiction I can think of! But, a direct email notice of upcoming releases, free reads, parties, or  guest appearances,(*gulp*) is a very useful thing. Not everyone stops by my blog and I often have news.
I have another author friend who makes fabulous newsletters with a site called MailChimp.  They’re absolutely beautiful. I went there thinking to check it out and promptly got lost in the part where I had to put my address in. No, I don’t think so. I’m still trying to come up with a way to have my picture taken and keep my anonymity. I’ve heard stories firsthand and murmurs of authors getting stalked. I can’t imagine why, though a Steven King novel comes to mind. The world is full of people living outside of reality. And they’re not all writers.  ;)
Along those lines, I’ve been trying to decide if I’ll publish as Rose Anderson when my Magnum Opus, that aforementioned, 31/2-years in the making, 5-book series, is ready to go. Decisions, decisions. But I have time on that one. I haven’t so much as gotten rid of an unnecessary  ;  in that story in months. Who has time?? I’ve said before, it may have been a quick path into the publishing world, but it is by no means an easy path.  I know I said I was going to devote Wednesday s to promoting. Ha! There aren’t enough Wednesdays in the week! Instead I’ve got it down to about three hours a day most days. It’s hard to believe I’ve only been doing this since March. Well, it’s more accurate to say, since the end of April. I had no clear idea what to do that first month. It seems like I’ve been doing this a very long time. Just today, I swear I lived two days. I can’t explain it better than that.
Back to that newsletter idea. Yes it has merit so I will be adding it to my 28-hour  a day to-do list. I don’t know just how it’s going to work, but I’ll launch something soon.
As an author, I’m plugged in to about 75 of the yahoo groups. These are places where readers congregate. Some of the groups I’m on have over 1000 members. Each day a Promotion Loop Schedule comes to my inbox, and in it are all the groups that allow postings on that day. I have my “stack”. Going by my own preferences for how often I’d like to see them, I try to mix it up. Some days I send my accumulated reviews, other days an excerpt. I have three of these – Sweet, sizzling, and scorching and these too are mixed up so as not to repeat and bore. I send three different versions of  “come follow my links” and like the others, I change them out and switch this one for that. Some days I suggest they go give my youtube book trailers a go. I’ve noticed a jump in hits on those days so people are reading and then going to check things out. Following the lead of one of my author friends, I’ve decided to give Yahoo groups a go for my newsletter. When my website is finally done, I’ll have this widget posted.
All any interested person will have to do is click on it and leave your email in the little box that appears.  I envision a once a month newsletter post.
Speaking of following, it blows me away that strangers tap me and tell me they want to follow me on Twitter and the various other sites I’m on. What fun! I’ve had some great conversations and even met a neighbor, that is, an author who lives about 15 minutes from me. I’ve been slowly adding my profile and book info to various sites for higher profile. As of today I’m on a new one. It has “More than 1 million readers every month”. I’d love to see a million Rose Anderson readers!
The Author’s Den. Where Authors and Readers Come Togetherhttp://www.authorsden.com/visit/author.asp?AuthorID=155021
I got an email the other day telling my Hermes Online’s youtube book trailer was her featured guest video this week on Toni Sweeney’s blog. http://www.tonivsweeney.com/Guest_Trailer.html
I was so surprised, I decided to make it a contest. I thought let’s have some fun with this. I sent the notice to my 75 groups saying the first person to email me to tell me where that knife is in the video, gets an ebook copy of Hermes Online and a soon-to-be-famous autographed cover.  Lots of replies on that one needless to say.  LOL Yes you can go look –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp4b1GTV6qQ
That video made number one for nearly a week on http://www.previewthebook.com/book.php?id=3246   That was a cool surprise considering it’s amateurish compared to the professionally done trailers out there. I plan on sending Dreamscape there as soon as it goes to paperback which should be any time now if I follow the progression of Hermes Online all those months ago.
I’ve got several guest blogs coming up but I’ll blog those as they come. Instead let me say I finally have reviews!! Recall in another post where I was wondering if I highbrowed myself into a corner with Dreamscape? The book had me worried there for a while.  What started out as a great first few weeks stalled to a trickle of sales. I got one nice reader review but as nice as it was, in it the reader also stated she got lost. Did that slow things down? I don’t know. It was still a great review but maybe readers don’t like to think they’d get lost at the end. It’s more likely that the economy dictates the whole thing. I just happened to have my author’s debut during a Depression! Thanks a lot Powers That Be.
(lol I can tell it’s getting late when I start having sidebar discussions with myself!)
Back to reviews. Anyway, look what I’ve found for Dreamscape 15 stars!
5 Star Review by Jane Leopold Quinn
What a lovely story! A young girl falls in love with a house and grows up to buy it. Haven’t you ever seen a building that just captured your imagination and your heart? The whole town knows the old mansion is haunted, but Lanie O’Keefe is about to find out for sure. Jason Bowen has watched the town grow around his house for 120 years — all the years he’d been dead. Dead since just after the Civil War. Jason knew he’d been murdered by his wife and her evil friends but had no memory of how the deed occurred. In the Twenty-first Century, when the beautiful Lanie moves into his house and proceeds to restore it to its original glory, he knows this will be a new chance at “life.” How does a ghost physically touch the woman he loves? How does a flesh and blood woman come to realize that she’s falling in love with an ethereal being? Humor and sensuality shine through in this story. Believe me, Ms. Anderson created some delightful ways for Lanie and Jason to communicate their feelings. Lush and lyrical describe the prose — hot and sumptuous the love scenes. While you’re reading Dreamscape, you’ll come up with happily ever after theories. You’ll desperately want to so these two people can triumph over death. My advice? Just read and enjoy the ride to the end. I had my thoughts, and they were wrong. The real ending is a wonderful surprise. Just let it be, and live in the Dreamscape.
5-Star Review by Dr. Judith
OMG — what a novel!! This is one of those books that lures the reader in with its mysterious scenario of dreams and a woman who has always romanticized this wonderful house–literally falling in love with a house as well as the gorgeous man occupying the house a century before. Ms Anderson has crafted a story that will continually entice the imagination of the reader to move forward in the hopes of finding a way these two lovers can ultimately be together, solve the mystery of the hero’s death, or find ways to re-create the gentility of the past–especially if Lanie can find a way to be there with her dream lover. Yet there are surprises all the way through, not to mention that the ending absolutely floored me and got me all twisted up . . . in a good way, of course. Just an absolutely stunning story and one that all lovers of romance fiction need to read. This is not a story that should be missed. I feel it has been a true delight and privilege to read this tale.
5-Star review by Manic Readers
Loved Dreamscape! Anderson has woven a 150 year old mystery with a 21st century ghost story, along with a few jealousies, murders, and assorted other intrigues to make a fascinating story. You could call this a time travel, a love story over the ages, or whatever, but it’s well done no matter what you want to call it.
Lainie seemingly exists in the 21stcentury where she’s renovating an old painted lady Victoria house that once belonged to Dr. Jason Bowen, who was murdered 150 years ago. She also seems to be able to exist in one form or another in Jason’s time. Jason and Lainie are in love in his time, but how will they manage to be together in hers? I wondered as I read this how the lovers were ever going to solve that problem, but was totally surprised at how Anderson arrived at the HEA ending I was hoping for, as I read far into the night. Great read with a surprising twist ending.
I’m smiling.
The Best & the Consciousless
Have I mentioned I’ve been busy? This weekend an email came shooting by my inbox asking questions about various networking groups. I had some time, the family was out and about, so I thought I should look into some of the more well-known offerings out there. Networking is good. People get interested in what’s up with you like books out, reviews, events, etc, if they know you. I started with one of the more visual — Linked-In.
{Hanging my head}
Here’s the wiki definition of this thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn
Now it may work great for people with careers out there that could use a wide network. I found it to be a monster-sized headache that set in motion a world of aggravation for me. First, it asked for the basics, name email, etc. Then it rifled my yahoo address book!
You’ll love this. Months ago, before yahoo did its unnecessary and annoying update, I’d set the thing not to keep addresses. I don’t use address books. I keep all my addresses offline in a file since I was inadvertently sent an email-harvester by a friend several years ago. Well guess what? Yahoo, not only updated its bells and whistles that I don’t need and could really do without, it also reset that blasted address book behind my back. Linked-In did a grab-n-snatch and sent an email from me asking recipients to be my friend in an attempt to link up EVERYONE in the address book I disabled. Gaaaa!!!
What did that get me?
A.) I was bumped off one yahoo group for breaking their rules (I’m since back on)
B.) I was sent several emails from people saying oh no, you didn’t…
C.) Time spent apologizing. Apologies sent through yahoo have that %&$# encryption to figure out before you send them!
D.) Time spent figuring out how to delete the Linked-In account.
I seriously hate sneaky things like that.  :(
I did find some nice places to park my mug, well not my mug, Calliope’s mug. It’s kind of pointless to have a nom de plume if you’re going to put your face everywhere. One thing I do know about the internet, it’s not that big when it comes to anonymity. My face shows up on searches and I’m far less newsworthy than Rose. I don’t like that but that’s how it goes with the internet.
Of these places, I tried to pick the ones that appear to have the most going for a writer. Time will tell just what all they have. Here are my top four with info direct from their sites:
She Writes
http://www.shewrites.com
She Writes is a community, virtual workplace, and emerging marketplace for women who write, with over 15,000 active members from all 50 states and more than 30 countries. Leveraging social media tools and harnessing women’s collaborative power, She Writes is fast becoming the destination for all women who write.
What I’ve done there so far -
I’ve created a blog with a little about me and Calliope’s cool picture as my avatar, and somehow linked it to Twitter. I posted a little piece about the Muses, the excerpt taken from this blog. I’ve also gained my first “friend” there. I like it. It’s easy to use, friendly, and as the site FAQ’s say, there are over 15,000 active members there. I’d love it if they all became Rose Anderson fans!
Writers Café
http://www.writerscafe.org/
A friendly community where people—friends—can offer advice, share ideas, and encourage you in your writing.
What I’ve done so far –
Built a profile using my canned profile (the profile I first made for myself all these many months ago). I’ll redo it as I have time. I added Calliope’s avatar picture too. As of this morning I have a “friend” and an offer to join the Poetic Infusion Society. I have yet to delve deeply into this group or the site as a whole. Shortly after I signed up, the aforementioned fiasco with Linked-In began. It looks great though and will get more of my attention soon.
The Red Room
http://redroom.com/
Red Room is a community founded around the idea that writing transforms individuals and sometimes whole societies—whether you’re a writer or a reader, you’re part of something special. It’s a platform built for the future of publishing, an ecosystem where you can have a home, find friends and colleagues, and participate in the marketplace. Red Room is a social hub, a place to discuss and buy books in every genre, and a destination for exclusive content that will entertain and inspire you. Causes We Support is a vital part of Red Room, as it shines a spotlight on organizations effecting change around the world. Because our authors are also socially minded, we also profile the nonprofit/charity groups significant to them.
What I’ve done so far -
Started my Author’s page with the calliope avatar, part of my canned bio, and an example of a review I’d recently received that spoke about me the author more than the book I’d written. This too got shoved aside while I dealt with Linked-In. I find the Causes We Support aspect of this group exciting. While I seriously doubt my erotic romances will transform anyone, I know my magnum opus (see previous posts) has great potential to do just that. By then, I should have all the details of The Red Room down pat. It looks like a very cool site to be involved in because activism for the betterment of the world is what I do! There’s just something about rubbing elbows with Barack Obama, Maya Angelou, Salman Rushdie, and John Stewart. I gotta get my magnum opus done. I’m sure they’d all understand it.  :)
**Update. The Calliope avatar is a no-go here. I received an email telling me they need an actual picture. I sent a reply asking about nom de plumes. No reply as of this writing.  :(   I haven’t outed myself yet so I’ll have to put my membership in this one on the back burner for a time until I figure out what I’m going to do.
Manic Readers
http://www.manicreaders.com/
Our mission is to provide readers with a wide variety of information on the industry’s books, authors, and publishers, while simultaneously giving authors and publishers a place to promote their books for free.
It’s funny, I periodically search the internet looking for where my books have gone next and what reviews have been posted that I wasn’t expecting. Oh, and of course trolling the waters for pirates. Anyway, I’ve seen my name pop up with Manic Readers, a well-respected site in the industry. To my surprise, I discovered recently they encourage authors to have pages there. And so there I went.
What I’ve done so far -
I finally worked on an Author’s Page there by posting a canned bio, adding calliope’s mug, and all my pertinent links. This site, like the others, will get more of my time as I find it.
***
So in the day to day, I’m making great progress on my third novel. In the past week I’ve set up four author interviews – one in September, two in October, and one in November. I have one character interview set for sometime this fall. Whew. Busy busy.
I found a site the other day with an opportunity to post a kiss. I wrote a sweet first kiss in Hermes Online. I plan on posting soon.
There are a few other things coming up but I won’t bog the blog with details at this time.
***
Every once in a while you do that double take. The kind of head motion that goes along with What???
This came my way the other day and I saved it for the blog. The national business magazine, Forbes, recently posted some $$ info on well-known authors. Holy cow.
James Patterson — $84 million
Danielle Steel — $35 million
Stephen King — $28 million
Janet Evanovich — $22 million
Stephenie Meyer — $21 million
Rick Riordan — $21 million
Dean Koontz — $19 million
John Grisham — $18 million
Jeff Kinney — $17 million
Nicholas Sparks — $16 million
So my author group discussed this a while. I won’t mention which one of these authors doesn’t actually do his/her own work, but I think if you’re not actually doing the writing, rather your crew is, then you shouldn’t be considered an author so much as an orchestrator or promoter.
Speaking of promoting…In that discussion I also learned there are authors who make no bones about buying 10,000 copies of their own book, thus propelling themselves into the best seller list. I heard Sarah Palin’s organization did that to her book. Someone said she actually heard a writer stand up at a meeting and tell how she purposely has her releases scheduled when no other big releases by bigger authors are scheduled. (Not a bad strategy if you’re able to.) (This next part blows my mind) Then she buys her books in the ten thousands and hits the bestsellers list. I say WTF? What’s with these authors?
So I have to ask…do they then sell those books they just bought in volume? This is sort of a mad scientist form of marketing, brilliant in a totally dishonest, totally evil way. On what planet is it fair to buy your way into a bestselling slot? Bestsellers are supposed to be reader driven. They’re supposed to be THE book everyone is talking about and buying. In addition to the sales bump a bestseller gives them, these unscrupulous authors not only get the royalties from the sales they just made, they get to resell their pallets of books and make their money back. And it’s all done in a rather dubious way don’t you think? An author friend said, [There are ways to cheat and always people who'll do it. And occasionally those who will admit to it as if it's a clever marketing strategy.] No kidding.
I wonder how a person’s moral compass loses its needle like that, that this disconnect occurs and they see it as clever and not as dishonest. Would their readers ever pick up another of their books if they knew they were set up to believe they were buying a bestseller that had that standing only because the numbers were skewed? I doubt it. Sometimes I’m so surprised by the actions of others.
Putting in for the 28 hour day
Did you ever notice there just aren’t enough hours in the day sometimes? Why is that? There are 168 hours in the week, every week, yet I find myself scrambling to make time at times. If I were to couch this phenomena in Star Trek terms, I think what I’m seeing is a temporal anomaly. I must be living in an alter-verse where time runs quicker than it does for everyone else. I write and hours pass with only inches of text created. Inches! Now granted, I self edit along the way and who knows how many words actually come and go before I settle on the perfect scene or the best dialogue.
About three weeks ago, I finished a book project for my work that took nearly two years to complete. Logic says, with it out of the way, there should be more time, right? Uh uh.  I try not to let everything around me suffer but there’s no doubt in my mind that it does in small ways. Take dust for instance.
My house is dusty right now. I have seasonal allergies and a dust allergy. I live in one of the prettiest places in the Midwest but there’s an allergy sufferer’s price to pay for that beauty. The entire place is in wildflower pollen right now and the neighboring corn fields have filled the air with it. I can’t draw a breath without exposure to some irritant or another. So here I am doing my mid-week promoting and blogging, blowing my nose for the hundredth time since I woke up this morning on a sneezing jag. Ugh. Needless to say, the thought of dusting and stirring dust mites into the air to add to this itchy-eyed, runny-nosed, itchy-throat, itchy-eared, wheezing wretchedness, has not entered my mind since the end of July. An early hard frost has been on my mind.
So things have been busy like I mentioned in my previous post. I’m writing my book of course and see the ending in my mind’s eye now. I’m also finishing up an author interview and trying to come up with catchy posts for both the upcoming 2-day End of Summer Bash at The Romance Studio August 26- 28th, and the month long October Starving Authors’ spot (of which I most definitely qualify) over at the TwoLips Reviews page.
Speaking of reviews. I’m way behind in sending review requests out for Dreamscape. *sigh* Like I said I’m putting in for the 28 hour day.
My author’s group just started planning for the Fall for Romance extravaganza similar in breadth and scope of the successful Summer Love-In all day promotional event.
Ok, my feet are back on the ground. As busy as I am, I still read up on many things involving the business I’m in. There are several bits worth mentioning. The first — I saw some sobering news last night –
National Public Radio (NPR) posted some info that said there are risks associated with prolonged periods of time sitting. It’s really bad for you. A study was done calculating how much time men spent sitting in their cars, at their desks, in front of the TV. Men who sat  more, were considerably more likely to die. Men with more than 23 hours a week of sedentary activity had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease than those with 11 hours a week or less of sedentary activity. According to this study, many of these men regularly exercised too! What the heck? Apparently the major muscles are not contracting enough. Those big muscles in your legs and back, the muscles need to be used or metabolism slows down and undesirable levels of cholesterol, blood sugar, and triglycerides rise. An increase in waist size comes with it too which increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, etc. Great. I write all day and I don’t do it standing up.
Next, I read an article by Gary McLaren entitled WHY SHOULD WRITERS USE TWITTER?
I have tweeted but admit I’ve not known how to fully utilize this venue. After reading this article, I plan on doing better.
His Ten Reasons are really well thought out –
1. Write a Professional Profile. Who you are, what you do, and your various links.
2. Join the Conversation. Find pertinent conversations and contribute.
3. Research a Topic. Bone up on those questions everyone is asking.
4. Build Your Reputation. Speaks for itself.
5. Use HashTags. What are these # anyway?
6. Find Experts. Make contacts!
7. Job Hunting. Why not?
8. Interact with Other Writers. Good advice and tips.
9. Tweet Quality. Don’t blather.
10. Follow Potential Clients. Hmm…
A post shot by my inbox the other day regarding a promotional opportunity over at Sizzling Hot Books called Back To Smut (a catchy spin on Back to School). I don’t really consider my work smut, certainly not after one review site gave my steamiest novel, Hermes Online, a heat rating of 2 (on a range from mild simmering 1 to a conflagrating 5 ½). Still, a weeklong opportunity to pitch my works there might entice a few new readers to look me up. I’ll post more as I get info. So far it’s set for September 2nd and runs to the 7th. Here’s their link: http://www.sizzlinghotbooks.net/
Before I sign off on the blog, I just want to say wordpress.org was the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to figure out. This page is created on wordpress.com.  And it’s another creature entirely. I tried to expand it a little with a new template of theirs. Blah. I know there are many happy people that use this site for their blogs but I envisioned something else. I wanted a more fluid website to attach to my blog — an author’s showcase to offer space to all the great authors I’ve come to know and easy access to everything I have to offer. I bought a program and made a beauty of a template too. It was perfect, it was fluid, and it was eye-catching and inviting. I set it up to be every single thing I wanted in a website. Unfortunately I couldn’t use it. I just couldn’t figure out how to get it onto wordpress.org to park it at the webhost I entered into a contract with.  :(
Following wordpress.org’s less than simple directions, I bought a domain for two years and tried to get my template up and running that way. I asked people for help, several of whom really tried but what they were telling me to look for was never on any of the pages I saw before me. To this day I have no idea why. I suspected my browser, Mozilla’s Firefox, for a while and even tried to go through Google Chrome and Internet Explorer to no avail. I talked to a great tech person at BlueHost who tried like hell to get my website set up. Unfortunately, the issue was with wordpress.org and I wasn’t hearing anything from wordpress.org other than silence. Seriously not one peep, not even a form letter saying they don’t help. Not being able to figure out the tech speak myself by digging in wordpress.org’s user forums, I gave up and got my refund from the very nice BlueHost people, minus the cost for my month of pain. I have this wordpress.com blog paid for until April 2012 then it’s time to move on. I’m hoping I can keep my web address. I have a lot of promotional items sporting CalliopesWritingTablet. That would be almost as bad as getting Billy Bob’s name tattooed on your arm then breaking up.  :(
That’s it for now. Looking at the clock, I see my morning hourglass has run out of time, and once again, I just don’t know where the time has gone. Scotty beam me up!
Busy busy
I haven’t posted in several days but I have been busy with new things.
Busy [biz-ee] adjective, bus·i·er, bus·i·est, verb, bus·ied, bus·y·ing.
  1. actively and attentively engaged in work or a pastime: busy with her work.
  2. not at leisure; otherwise engaged: He couldn’t see any visitors because he was busy.
  3. full of or characterized by activity: a busy life.
  4. (of a telephone line) in use by a party or parties and not immediately accessible.
  5. officious; meddlesome; prying.
Origin:
Before 1000; Middle English busi, bisi, Old English bysig, bisig; cognate with Middle Low German, Middle Dutch besich, Dutch bezig
I got to thinking the other day, that since promoting my books takes up so much of my creative time, I’d devote one day a week solely to that task. Wednesday seemed logical. In a discussion with an author friend this morning, I realized once again that our small group is blessed with the tireless, generous input of Missy and Michele. Between these two ladies just about every aspect of promotion is covered. It seems like creative new ways pop up all the time.
Not too long ago I was invited to join a marketing group for writers that’s been around a while. (How I got there is a tale for another time) There are 948 people populating that group and in the past few days I’ve learned some interesting tips on marketing, several of which I’ve passed on to others.
The topic of bookmarks arose. Now I’ve heard conflicting things about bookmarks. Some people like them, others don’t. Recall early on in this blog my mentioning how I went to a conference and had an author all to myself. (does that really sound the way I think it does?) Anyway, he recommended bookmarks as the single best inexpensive marketing tool. Having studied this every way from Sunday in the past few months, I’m still not sure that’s the case. The first reason – I recycle every bit of paper that comes my way. If I buy a book and the store’s bag is filled with ads for this or that, I recycle them, most times I don’t even look at them unless it’s to determine if they’re glossy or can be recycled with office paper. I also dog ear books when I read. And with a family of dog ear readers, I know I’m not alone. But that could very well be a case of nature vs. nurture there.
I made a proto-bookmark some months ago but never used it. I just got busy with other things. (there’s that word again) At the time I shopped around and the cheapest I came up with was 55 for $27.50 or about 5¢ each. Not bad. Still, going by my own personal bias, I wasn’t sure this was the way to go.
Then Vistaprint entered my life. I’ve mentioned it before and by now you’d think the company would start paying ME for promoting them. The company regularly dangles their carrot on a stick in front of me. Try as I might to ignore making something else, I’m a person who really likes to create pretty things. What’s more, I’m a pushover for a deal. I’ve shown the various things I’ve made in earlier blog posts and I’ve used them too – as giveaways, contest prizes, etc. In fact, I’m sending a bunch of different things to a conference coming up in the near future and to another after that. I also plan on attending the big Romantic Times Conference in Chicago next year and will bring a load of goodies with me.
So after getting Vistaprint’s email sale flier, I see an offer for oversized post cards. I have two yet-to-be-used stacks of bookcover postcards that I’ll sign and hand out to readers who’d like them when I attend any conferences in the foreseeable future. But since covers are covered – no pun intended, I don’t need oversized post cards. Then that light bulb went off over my head. What if I used oversized post card dimensions and used my Microsoft publisher program to make side by side bookmarks? I could then upload it as an image to Vistaprint.  All I’d need to do is leave myself enough space to make one cut to separate them. Voila bookmarks! :)
Here’s the end product –
So my oversized post card offer was free and it happened to coincide with an image upload offer of $2.99 for new uploads. So far, the bookmarks have cost me $2.99 plus shipping at $4.49.  That’s less that a penny a piece. They’ve arrived and they look terrific, much clearer than my above image implies. I cut them carefully down the center (I designed them tight on purpose to limit trimming later) and I now have 50 of each. That was fun! :)
Back to my Wednesday promo day…
I dug through several emails I’d been saving that had assorted promo opportunities. I have lots more to go. It came to me it might behoove me to actually take care of these as they come in rather than save them to do later. I discovered I let two nice opportunities slip by by waiting too long. Busy busy.
I entered the What’s on My Desk Wednesday photo op over at AlternativeRead.com
I entered my book trailers in two separate contests
I posted my Hermes Online Trailer at — http://www.previewthebook.com/book.php?id=3246  and a moment ago I see my simple little video is in forth place in the top watched previews today. Wow!
I entered the October Starving Author spot over at TwoLips Reviews. Talk about a bang for the buck. A full month of *air time* for $10. The month of August looks great so I know my slot will too.
And I entered two separate cover contests with Jinger Heaston’s fabulous interpretation of Dreamscape.
I sent out two more review requests on top of all that and next week I’ll do some more.
Busy busy.
I’ve mentioned before that I regularly post to the various readers groups populating yahoo. All told there are a few thousand members when you add them up. Every time I got one back, it was filled with garbage like small black diamonds with a white question mark inside or strange algebra-like symbols replacing ( ‘ ) and  ( – ) .  Imagine how frustrating it is to write they’re and get theyӬre. Every time!! There’s some kind of communication breakdown between MSWord and Yahoo. I have no idea how to fix it. So the other day I spent a good two hours rewriting every promotional excerpt and teaser I’d crafted in Word into the post box on my author’s group’s yahoo site. Over and over I’d state in the subject line Testing my posts – please ignore so as not to be a total pain in the butt flooding everyone’s inbox with my junk mail. I trimmed them down and they now sit in my drafts folder for quick posting. I’ve yet to use them. Like I said …busy busy.
